Passion Week

A rich Catholic past may be seen in the religious customs and practices of Vigan, a UNESCO World past site in the northern Philippines, especially during the Lenten season. In the run-up to the celebration of Easter Sunday, the season of Lent is a crucial one for Catholics all over the world. It is a time of meditation, fasting, and prayer. Because of the city's strong Catholic heritage, Lent is observed in Vigan through a variety of religious ceremonies and observances.

The Via Crucis, also known as the Way of the Cross, is one of Vigan's most prominent traditions during the Lenten season. Participants in this act out Jesus Christ's journey to the crucifixion, carrying a wooden cross and stopping at various stations for reflection and prayer. Devotees typically perform this while marching throughout the city while chanting and singing hymns. Teachers and club officers went to The Via Crucis at our school as well. Catholics in Vigan can reconnect with their religion and reflect on Jesus Christ's supreme sacrifice by walking along the Via Crucis.

Visita Iglesia, which involves stopping by multiple churches in a single day to pray and reflect, is another significant custom that takes place during Lent in Vigan. On Maundy Thursday—the day before Good Friday—this is customarily carried out. The St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral and the Bantay Church Bell Tower, two well-liked Visita Iglesia sites, are among the several ancient and historic churches that can be found in Vigan. This custom is valued by many Catholics in Vigan as a significant method to demonstrate their love to God and to pursue spiritual refreshment during the Lenten season.

Many Catholics in Vigan also follow fasting and abstinence during Lent in addition to these customs. For the duration of the season, this may entail giving up particular meals or other comforts as a sign of sacrifice and dedication to God. Overall, Vigan's Catholics observe the Lenten season as a time of intense spiritual thought and observation, and the diverse customs and activities that are associated with it constitute a significant part of the city's religious heritage.
